Zanzibar Ferry Terminal (Maruhubi)
June 2026 Update on Operations & Construction

As construction of Phase 1A continues, the operations team at ZF Devco, under the leadership of Stella Kitali, Chief Operating Officer of ZF Operating Company Limited (ZF OpCo), together with Juma Abubakar, Managing Director of ZF DevCo, and George Tandiko, Terminal Manager at ZF OpCo, has successfully overseen the activation of operations for the Phase 1A RoRo and Passenger Ferry Terminal at Maruhubi Waterfront, along with its supporting infrastructure.

"Maruhubi Terminal has set a new benchmark for RoRo operations in Zanzibar, reducing turnaround times to just 28 minutes while enhancing safety, efficiency, and capacity. This milestone demonstrates the impact of modern infrastructure in advancing Zanzibar's economic development and Blue Economy vision."

— Stella Kitali, Chief Operating Officer, ZF Operating Company Limited

ZF DevCo is pleased to report that Phase 1A RoRo and Passenger Terminal commenced operations in May 2026 and has successfully handled over 50 Landing Craft Tank (LCT) vessel calls to date. Logistics vehicles are moving seamlessly from the ferry terminal through the weighbridge, along Malawi Road, and onward to their destinations. At the same time, trucks from across Zanzibar are utilizing the facility to access RoRo ferry services connecting the Unguja Island to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

This achievement represents a significant operational milestone for the New Zanzibar Ferry Terminal Project in Maruhubi. It demonstrates the functionality and effectiveness of the terminal and its associated infrastructure while establishing a strong foundation for future economic growth, trade facilitation, and regional connectivity. It also advances Zanzibar’s Blue Economy agenda and the Vision of His Excellency Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, for sustainable development and inclusive economic transformation.

Construction activities for the remainder of Phase 1A are progressing well and include the development of a new roundabout, modern warehouses, the Maruhubi Market retail and logistics centre, passenger waiting facilities, and civic infrastructure that will further enhance Maruhubi Waterfront.

ZF DevCo extends its sincere appreciation to companies such as Azam Marine Co. Ltd, Sahara line LTD, OCL Ocean Shipping Lines, Tropical Industries LTD, Bahari Marine Transport and M&M Investment CO. LTD and the crews operating the RoRo vessels. Their commitment, collaboration, and support during the operational rollout have been instrumental in achieving this important milestone.
