Zanzibar President visits Malindi Ferry Terminal
On January 20, 2026, the President of Zanzibar, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, accompanied by the First Lady and members of his delegation, visited the newly renovated Malindi Ferry Terminal in Zanzibar for the grand reveal of the newest passenger ferry boat from Bakhresa, The Dragon of the Sea.
The renovation of the historic Malindi Ferry Terminal was led by ZF Devco, which is also spearheading the development and relocation of the new ferry terminal at Maruhubi. The refurbishment of the Malindi terminal is intended to ensure uninterrupted ferry operations during the transition period, as the new Maruhubi Ferry Terminal is expected to reach full operational capacity within the next three years.
Until then, the Malindi Ferry Terminal will continue to serve as a critical transport hub. Each year, approximately five million passengers rely on the terminal for connectivity between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, as well as other destinations across East Africa and beyond.
The visit underscored the government’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure while maintaining essential services for residents, businesses, and visitors.
